Lincoln Townley (b. 1971)
Study for Banker Collection — Full Figure
Ink on paper | 2025 | Original

The sketch is where everything begins. Before the layered mixed media canvases that have made Lincoln Townley's Skull Banker series one of the most sought-after bodies of work in contemporary British art, before the lacquer and resin and the accumulated physical weight of the finished paintings, there is a sheet of paper and a mark made in real time — the first statement of an idea that will eventually command five and six-figure prices at Sotheby's, Christie's, and Bonhams.

Study for Banker Collection (Full Figure) is exactly this: a working drawing from 2025 in which Townley establishes the full compositional architecture of a new Banker figure. The suited form, the chain details, the specific posture of a man who operates at the extreme end of financial systems — all of it present here in the urgent, searching line of a practitioner thinking with his pen. The LT monogram and signature confirm direct authorship.

Townley describes his practice as "psychological expressionism" — painting about what it takes, and what it takes from you. These studies are the most direct available record of that psychological process: the artist not yet editing, not yet refining, simply looking at what he is trying to say and finding a way to say it. Collected by Al Pacino, Sylvester Stallone, and Robbie Williams. Sold through Sotheby's, Christie's, and Bonhams.

Available exclusively through Creed Gallery, Ascot, for collectors across Berkshire, Surrey, and London. Private viewings by appointment.
