Wuthering Romance
Original mixed media on linen | 2024
Wuthering Romance takes its title from the most atmospherically charged novel in the English literary tradition — Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights, whose Yorkshire moors, tempestuous passions, and Gothic darkness have made it one of the defining texts of Romantic literature. Lou Sheldon brings her Australian sensibility — the vast, light-saturated landscapes that have shaped her visual imagination — into dialogue with the specifically British emotional register that Brontë's title carries, finding in the collision something genuinely unexpected.
Working in oils, oil pastels, and gold leaf on linen, Sheldon builds surfaces of tactile richness through sustained layering — the spontaneous brushstroke and the accumulated material working together in compositions of considerable atmospheric depth. Available through Creed Gallery, Ascot, for collectors in Berkshire, Surrey, and London.
