Diazepam — the generic name for Valium, the same molecule stripped of its brand identity and returned to its chemical designation — is Valium without the cultural mythology, the pharmaceutical without the packaging. Newman's decision to name the drug by its generic name rather than its brand name is itself a formal decision: it removes the layer of commercial presentation and confronts the viewer with the molecule itself, the chemical intervention in its most unmediated form.
