As a centrepiece of the 'Depressed Generation' series, ‘Diazepam’ is a raw, confrontational exploration of a society that is simultaneously overstimulated and medicated. Mason Newman uses his unique perspective as a Forbes 30 Under 30 artist to examine the mental health crisis through the lens of his recurring character 'Gyal,' whose focalized eyes capture the tension between modern aspiration and internal anxiety. This large-scale work is built with turbulent layers of acrylic and spray paint, functioning as an honest, "diaristic" timestamp for a generation scrolling for survival.
