Madness is Genius takes its title from a phrase most often attributed to Marilyn Monroe herself — "I'm selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best" — and applies it to the portrait of the woman who said it. The equation of madness with genius is both a defence and an observation: Monroe understood that the qualities that made her extraordinary were inseparable from the qualities that made her difficult.
