Natasha Barnes (b. 1969)
Outback
Original large-scale abstract expressionist painting
Natasha Barnes is a self-taught South African artist who gave up a successful career as a Cordon Bleu chef and food stylist to paint full time — a decision that has since made her one of South Africa's most published and internationally collected abstract painters. Her work has been exhibited in London, New York, Dubai, Hong Kong, and Singapore, and she was a finalist for the British Artist of the Year Award in 2017. She paints from instinct, absorbing her subjects in the mind before transferring them directly to canvas without observation — a process that gives her work an immediacy and energy that more deliberate methods cannot produce.
Outback takes its subject from the vast, ancient Australian landscape — a terrain of extraordinary visual drama that Barnes translates into her characteristic abstract expressionist language: rich colour, thick impasto texture, and the sense of a landscape felt rather than depicted. The palette captures the ochres, burnt siennas, and deep terracottas of the outback at different hours of the day, the paint applied with the physical commitment that Barnes brings to all her large-scale work.
Available exclusively through Creed Gallery, Ascot, for collectors across Berkshire, Surrey, and London.
