Umani Springs takes its name from the Umani Springs in Kenya — a rare permanent water source in the Kibwezi Forest, one of the few remaining inland forests in East Africa, home to a significant elephant population and a landscape of extraordinary natural beauty. Barnes, whose work draws on the rich visual world of sub-Saharan Africa, brings to this subject the same instinctive, physically committed approach that characterises all her large-scale work.

The palette here is characteristically rich — the deep greens and blues of a forest with permanent water, the brightness of reflected light on moving water, the lush density of landscape that has access to what the surrounding savannah lacks. The thick impasto surface carries the energy of the subject, paint applied in the spontaneous, committed manner that gives her canvases their distinctive vitality.
