Dreamtide locates Neil Nelson's practice at the boundary between the seen and the imagined — the title suggesting a tide that moves between waking and dreaming, between the observed landscape and the interior world that landscape opens up. Nelson's atmospheric technique allows the two to coexist on the same canvas: the literal qualities of light on water present alongside something that exceeds literal description.

The painting is built with the patient, layered process that characterises Nelson's best work — paint applied in transparent washes and then reworked, the surface never quite finished in the way that more decisive painters finish their canvases. The incompleteness is the point: this is a painting about atmosphere, and atmosphere by definition is always in motion, always changing, never fully resolved.
