Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) — Jeux de Plage

Pablo Picasso, born in Málaga in 1881 and trained at the academy of fine arts in Barcelona, went on to co-found Cubism alongside Georges Braque and remains one of the defining figures of twentieth-century art, moving across the Blue and Rose periods into the fractured geometry that would reshape modern painting and printmaking alike. His return to the beach and bather as subject recurred across four decades of his career, from the monumental bathers of the late 1920s to the populated coastal scenes he produced in the mid-1950s.

In the summer of 1955, while being filmed for Henri-Georges Clouzot's Le Mystère Picasso, Picasso worked through a series of beach scenes for the camera, moving between imagery of modern beach games and visions of a more antique, pastoral world. Jeux de Plage draws on this project: a Cubist boardwalk scene in which architecture, parasols, and bathing figures fracture into overlapping planes of colour and line. This lithograph was produced between 1979 and 1982 as part of the Marina Picasso Estate Lithograph Collection, authorised by the artist's granddaughter and executed by the chromist Laurent Marcel Salinas, who had worked closely with Picasso during his lifetime.
