Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) is the defining artist of the modern era — co-founder of Cubism with Georges Braque, and among the most prolific and continuously inventive figures in Western art history, working across painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics and printmaking for seven decades. "Buste de Femme" extends the same head into the shoulders and torso, dressed in a loosely scrawled floral pattern Picasso often used as shorthand for fabric. Bearing a June 1946 date inscription, it belongs to the run of graphic, large-eyed female portraits he made in the years immediately after the war.
