Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) is the defining artist of the modern era — co-founder of Cubism with Georges Braque, and among the most prolific and continuously inventive figures in Western art history, working across painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics and printmaking for seven decades. "Couple" (Bloch 1460) belongs to Picasso's celebrated 347 Series — the extraordinary run of etchings he made between 16 March and 8 October 1968, working almost daily with printers Aldo and Piero Crommelynck at Mougins. Dated in the plate, this dense, cross-hatched composition of two entwined nude figures is typical of the suite's rapid, uninhibited return to the oldest subjects in his repertoire: the artist, the model, the couple.
