Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) is the defining artist of the modern era — co-founder of Cubism with Georges Braque, and among the most prolific and continuously inventive figures in Western art history, working across painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics and printmaking for seven decades. "Joueur de flûte et chèvre" develops the same pastoral cast further — twin horned pipers, a watchful goat and a stand of foliage arranged across a warm green and rose ground. Picasso returned to this flute-player-and-goat pairing throughout his Vallauris years — most famously in a ceramic plate of the same name — and this sheet captures the motif on paper, ahead of any translation into clay.
