RETNA — Marquis Lewis, born in Los Angeles in 1979 — is among the most immediately recognisable artists working in any tradition today. His constructed script, developed from the intersection of Egyptian hieroglyphics, Arabic calligraphy, Hebrew typography, and the graffiti culture of East Los Angeles, constitutes a visual language that operates simultaneously as mark-making, as cultural synthesis, and as a system of meaning that rewards sustained attention without ever fully resolving into legibility.
