RETNA (Marquis Lewis, b. 1979) is recognised for his distinctive visual language, combining influences from calligraphy, typography and historic writing systems to create a highly recognisable contemporary style.
Rather than functioning as conventional text, RETNA’s constructed script becomes an expressive visual form. Repeated characters, dense linework and carefully structured compositions create a strong sense of rhythm and movement across the surface.
This large-scale original work demonstrates the commanding presence of RETNA’s practice. Executed in acrylic on canvas, the composition brings together his characteristic constructed script and dense linear forms, transforming written language into an abstract visual structure.
At 127 × 72 inches, the scale of the work allows RETNA’s intricate mark-making to become particularly immersive, with the relationship between repetition, line and negative space forming an important part of the composition.
An original RETNA work, available through Creed Gallery, Ascot.
