RETNA (Marquis Lewis, b. 1979)

RETNA (Marquis Lewis, b. 1979, Los Angeles) is one of the most widely collected artists to have emerged from the West Coast street art scene, known for a constructed script drawn from Egyptian hieroglyphics, Arabic and Hebrew calligraphy, and Gothic blackletter. Built up over three decades of practice, his work is held in institutional and private collections internationally, with sustained secondary-market demand into five figures.

This untitled watercolour finds RETNA working in a looser, more fluid register than his large-scale spray-paint and acrylic pieces. Interlocking circles and grid-like passages move across the sheet in blue, plum, and burnt terracotta, with faint pencil annotations in the artist's hand across the upper margin. The sheet's deckled edge is visible within the frame, underscoring its status as a unique, one-of-a-kind work on paper rather than a printed edition.
