Horse & Rider in blue is among the most visually compelling works in Hambleton's printed output — the Shadowman series extended into the equestrian, the silhouette of horse and rider rendered in his characteristic gestural technique against a blue ground that gives the work an atmospheric quality distinct from the more monochrome works in the series. The horse, like the Shadowman, is a presence at the edge of vision — powerful, slightly threatening, impossible to ignore.

Hambleton began the Horse & Rider series in the later phase of his career, when his street art background was being reappraised by the institutional and collector market that had initially overlooked it. The equestrian subject suited his vocabulary perfectly — the horse as the original urban presence, the animal that shaped cities before the car replaced it.
