Standing Figure with Blue Background places the Shadowman against a field of blue — a chromatic decision that transforms the psychological register of the image. The Shadowman on a white ground is a figure of urban threat; against blue, he becomes something more ambiguous, more melancholy, more dimensional. The blue is the colour of distance, of atmosphere, of the sky — and placing the Shadowman's black silhouette against it creates a conversation between the figure and something much larger than the city that originally generated him.

Hambleton's limited edition prints have strengthened considerably in the secondary market since the Tribeca documentary Shadowman and the definitive Rizzoli retrospective of 2022.
