Richard Hambleton (1952–2017)
Stop Sign, 2018
Giclée print on Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308gsm | 76 × 76 cm | Edition of 75
The Stop Sign — one of the most universally recognised objects in the urban environment — becomes, in Hambleton's hands, a vehicle for his defining Shadowman imagery. The gestural black silhouette painted over the red and white octagonal surface creates a visual collision between two of the most immediately legible sign systems in contemporary culture: the traffic sign that demands obedience, and the Shadowman that has always stood for something outside the rules, at the margins of the ordered city.
Stop Sign was produced in 2018, the year after Hambleton's death — one of the final editions authorised by the artist's estate. The giclée on Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308gsm is among the finest archival printing substrates available, ensuring the richness and depth of the image is fully preserved. Edition of 75, numbered in pencil.
Hambleton's work is held in the Brooklyn Museum, the Andy Warhol Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art. His market has strengthened considerably since the Tribeca documentary Shadowman and the 2022 Rizzoli retrospective. Available through Creed Gallery, Ascot, for collectors across Berkshire, Surrey, and London.
