Roy Lichtenstein (1923–1997)
Whaam! | Tate Gallery Edition (Right Panel)
Offset lithograph
The right panel of Whaam! — the explosion itself, the moment of impact rendered in the bold primaries and heavy black outlines of the comic book tradition — is the image that has entered the cultural imagination most completely. The word WHAAM! arcing above the fireball, the rocket's trajectory implied by the debris: Lichtenstein understood that the comic book artist had already solved the formal problem of representing explosive violence, and his contribution was to recognise that solution as art.
The Tate Gallery Edition is the official publication produced by the gallery that has held the original since 1966 — the most authoritative reproduction available. Available through Creed Gallery, Ascot, for collectors across Berkshire, Surrey, and London.
