Schoony (Jon Schofield, b. 1970)
Boy Soldier | Shield Rose — Black Glass
Rare carbon sculpture
The Shield Rose in black glass is the most formally dramatic of Schoony's Boy Soldier series — the opposition between the innocence of the child's face and the rose shield rendered in black glass creating a composition of unusual psychological power. Black glass carries associations of both beauty and darkness, of the mirror and the void, of something that reflects and absorbs simultaneously.
Schoony — the British sculptor and former Hollywood special effects artist whose credits include Saving Private Ryan — brings to this variant of his most celebrated series the technical command that comes from years of working with the most demanding materials in contemporary sculpture. The carbon and black glass combination is among the most technically challenging in his output. Available through Creed Gallery, Ascot, for collectors across Berkshire, Surrey, and London.
