Rising is among the most formally optimistic titles in Simon Kenny's catalogue — the upward movement, the ascent, the quality of something gaining altitude and momentum. His lyrical abstraction finds in this concept a formal proposition as much as a subject: how does a painting rise? Through colour, through the placement of light and dark, through the way the eye is directed upward through the composition.
