TRUST. iCON is an anonymous London street artist whose practice engages directly with the mechanisms of social control — policing, surveillance, the relationship between the state and the individual in urban space. Stop and Search takes its title from one of the most contested police powers in British law — a practice whose disproportionate use against Black and minority ethnic communities has been a flashpoint in the relationship between the Metropolitan Police and London communities for decades.

The work does not illustrate a position so much as embody a question: what does it mean to be stopped, to be searched, to be treated as a suspect on the basis of how you look rather than what you have done? TRUST. iCON brings to this subject the visual directness of street art — the kind of work that earns its place on a wall by saying something true about the environment that surrounds it.
