Vincent Devine — Whistler's Horse
Vincent Devine is an Irish artist from Tullamore, County Offaly, whose practice moves between surrealist figure painting, equestrian works of unusual formal intelligence, and the Neo-Dimensionist series — a body of portraiture that engages directly with mental health, identity, and the interior life of its subjects with a candour and visual sophistication that distinguishes it from more conventional approaches to these subjects.
His visual language blends realism and surrealism — the precisely rendered detail of the realist tradition combined with the dreamlike logic and symbolic depth of surrealism, the two in productive tension throughout his work. Vivid colour, mythological reference, and personal narrative coexist on the same canvas.
The title invites a reading within the Whistler tradition of painting as arrangement rather than narrative, applied to one of the most emotionally charged subjects in Western art. Whistler's Horse is among the most formally ambitious works in Devine's equestrian series — a large-format original combining gestural freedom with a precision of observation that comes from sustained looking at the animal itself.
Creed Gallery, Ascot, is currently the only UK gallery representing Vincent Devine, for collectors across Berkshire, Surrey, and London.
