Craig Alan is an American artist born in California and based in Atlanta whose Populus series has made him one of the most formally distinctive painters working in contemporary figurative art. His method is specific and immediately recognisable: large-scale images — iconic faces, buildings, cultural objects — built entirely from hundreds of individually hand-painted miniature figures, each one distinct, the whole only visible at distance. The proposition is both formal and philosophical. His monumental six-storey Phoenix Rising in Atlanta — featuring Ted Turner, Margaret Mitchell, and essential workers among its myriad figures — demonstrates the ambition of the Populus concept at architectural scale. His commercial commissions have included the album cover for Tom Walker's What a Time to Be Alive (which won British Breakthrough Act at the 2019 Brit Awards) and a unique portrait of Emma Watson commissioned by Avon, featuring hundreds of miniature figures representing women influenced by positive role models.
