About Michael F. Rumsby: From L'Oréal to the Easel
Rumsby grew up on the Suffolk coast, where the changing views of the North Sea shaped his eye, and studied at Lancaster University. He worked in international communications, in a senior role at L'Oréal in Paris, and took part every year in an exhibition the company held in the city, before leaving corporate life in 2010 to paint full time. He lives in south-west France, spent three months painting in Australia in 2014 and became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 2014. He has an ongoing residency with British Polo Day, and his Respair collection was shown in his first London solo exhibition at Clarendon Fine Art in Mayfair in 2022.
The Work: Light, Memory and Collage
He works in oil, pencil, charcoal, pastel and ink, building layered surfaces in vivid colour. He paints on location where he can, which makes a picture more representational, and finishes in the studio, where it tends to become more abstract. He says his work is "like a collage of different elements brought together to create one landscape". His Fernweh collection explores the impressions places leave on him after he has gone, painted intuitively from memory.

Negresco I and II are a pair showing the Nice coastline with the Hotel Negresco at its heart, in aquas, blues and sun-drenched sand tones. Forbidden Fruit (£1,250) and Borrowed Sundays (£1,250, sold) carry the same colour and expressive brushwork. All four are hand-embellished canvas editions, not unique paintings.
