About Michael Kagan: Painting Explorers
Kagan was born in Virginia Beach in 1980 and grew up near the first NASA field center. He studied at George Washington University and the New York Academy of Art, where he completed a postgraduate fellowship in 2005, and lives in Brooklyn. His oil paintings show explorers, from mountaineers to astronauts, with thick, deliberate brushstrokes that he says let a painting "fall apart or come back together" depending on how close you stand. His projects include a commission from the Smithsonian, apparel collaborations with Pharrell Williams and the cover of White Lies' album Big TV, which won an Art Vinyl award in 2013. He had a solo exhibition at Virginia MOCA in 2019/20, and a monograph was published by ARTBOOK | DAP in 2019. His work is in private and corporate collections including the Hall Collection, the Maezawa Collection and Fidelity Investments.
Moonwalker
Moonwalker is a screenprint in colours on Magnani Incisioni paper, published in 2024 by Brand X Editions, in an edition of 150, signed and numbered by the artist. Its sheet is about 24 × 24 in (61 × 61 cm) with a 20 × 20 in image. The astronaut fills the frame, and his crewmate appears only as a reflection in the visor.
