مجموعة: Nick Holdsworth

Creed Gallery in Ascot, Berkshire, offers Noughties Playboy by Nick Holdsworth, an artist's proof from a signed limited edition of pixel-portrait canvases, 71 × 95 cm, priced at £2,000. Holdsworth is the British artist who founded the cult T-shirt label Purple Om/Random before turning to pop-culture portraits built from pixels and repeated icons. Our team can advise on edition, framing and documentation for collectors across Berkshire, Surrey and London.

About Nick Holdsworth: From Fashion Label to Pixel Portraits

In 1998 Holdsworth set up Purple Om/Random, one of the first designer T-shirt labels, built on psychedelic imagery and youth culture. It was sold in Harvey Nichols, Harrods, Liberty, Colette in Paris and Barneys in Tokyo, and led to collaborations with Levi's Red-Japan, Eliminator-Japan, Block 60 in Italy and Griffin Studio. His interest in repeated graphics goes back to a 1998 swing ticket he designed to look like a sheet of LSD blotters. His design and digital skills then led him to fine art.

The Technique: Pixels and Repeated Icons

He starts from a source image, such as a celebrity, a musician or a moment from popular culture, and rebuilds it with hundreds of carefully placed pixels. He overlays a repeated icon, often a brand logo he links to the subject, and scales it to sharpen the overall image. On his originals he finishes with airbrush and inks, so each has a hand-finished element. His subjects have included George Michael, Oasis, Tupac, Bob Marley and Steve McQueen.

Noughties Playboy

Noughties Playboy builds a portrait from repeated Playboy bunny graphics in the pixel style, and evokes the glamour of the 2000s. Published as a signed limited edition on glazed box canvas, the work measures about 71 × 95 cm. Ours is an artist's proof, made alongside the main numbered edition.
