Picasso Prints: A Printmaking Career Across Six Decades
Printmaking was an important part of Picasso's practice throughout his career. He is said to have begun making prints in 1899 as a teenager and worked in earnest from 1904–05, producing series such as the roughly 100-etching Vollard Suite (1930–37) and, after the liberation of Paris, some 400 lithographs with the printer Fernand Mourlot. In 1963 the brothers Aldo and Piero Crommelynck set up an etching studio to work with him, and their collaboration led to late etchings such as the 347 Suite of 1968. Picasso worked with many of the leading printers and publishers of the twentieth century, which is why Pablo Picasso prints range so widely in date, technique and price.
Etchings, Lithographs, Zincographs and Reproductions: What Each Means
Etchings are created by drawing directly onto a prepared plate, allowing Picasso to develop his distinctive line and mark-making; our Picasso etchings include Amours de Jupiter et de Sémélé (1933) and 4 May 1945. Lithographs are produced using the lithographic process, particularly important to his work from the 1940s onwards. Zincographs are prints made from zinc plates, including works created for illustrated publications such as La Chèvre-Feuille, the 1943 book by Georges Hugnet published in Paris by Robert-J. Godet, for which Picasso made zincographs on red paper. Reproductions are different again: they are prints made after a Picasso work by a publisher or printer, not by Picasso himself, and we label them as such.
Illustrated Editions of the 1940s: La Chèvre-Feuille
La Chèvre-Feuille is an illustrated book of Picasso's wartime years. We offer the La Chèvre-Feuille Suite, 1943, as a set of six in red, and Variant of Faces (from La Chèvre-Feuille) as an individual work. The yellow set has sold, so register your interest for similar sets.
Faun, Flute-Player and Mediterranean Subjects
After the Second World War, working in Antibes and then Vallauris on the French Riviera, Picasso turned to a distinctly Mediterranean cast of subjects: fauns, centaurs, goats, fish and pastoral scenes drawn from classical mythology. Our collection includes Bust of a Faun, Faun and Double Flute, Faun Portrait II, Joueur de Flûte, Joueur de Flute Faun, Joueur de Flute et Chèvre I and III, Faun Joueurs de Flute et Gazelle, La Chèvre et le Berger, Poisson, Anguille et Citron, and Satyre, Faune et Centaure au Trident. Each product page states its medium, date and publication details.
Nudes, Portraits and Figure Studies
The Untitled Nudes I, II and III, Deux Modèles Debout, Tête De Femme, François Gilot and Une Maja Posant sur un Piédestal show Picasso's lifelong fascination with the human figure.
New Arrivals: Unsigned Reproductions After Picasso
Our newest Picasso arrivals are unsigned reproductions after his work, framed and clearly labelled as reproductions rather than original prints. They include Combat De Centaures à L'Arc, Trio Mythologique, Le combat des centaures, Combat de faune et de centaure, Blumenstillleben, Still Life, Hommage à la nymphe, Hommage á la Nymphe, 1956, Mes Dessins d'Antibes and Mes Dessins d'Antibes II, each measuring 19 × 16 cm unframed and 45 × 40 cm framed, and Jeux De Plage, measuring 72 × 45 cm unframed and 87 × 60 cm framed. Mid-century publishers reproduced Picasso's paintings and drawings by photomechanical processes such as heliogravure, a sophisticated intaglio technique that uses a photographic image to create a finely etched copper plate and gives a rich, almost photographic tonal depth. These pieces suit collectors who want the imagery of Picasso's Mediterranean period at a more accessible level, and each is priced on its product page. Our separate Jeux de Plage at £12,500 is a different work, an estate lithograph.
