Born in Essex in 1992, Nathan Preston is a self-taught painter whose work exists between realism and expressionism.

His practice employs layered mark-making, negative space and fragmented detail to create emotionally charged, open-ended narratives.

Reconstructing Jacques-Louis David's Napoleon Crossing the Alps through a contemporary visual language, Sans Peur began as an original painting before being developed into a series of hand-pulled silkscreen works. Each print was subsequently returned to the artist's studio and individually reworked by hand, resulting in thirty-three distinct works across three editions.

Available for preview prior to the public release on 10th June.

The Edition

Three editions. Thirty-three works. No reprints.

Standard Edition
Hand Finished
Silkscreen
Edition of 20
Each print is pulled by hand through a silkscreen and then returned to Preston's studio, where he works directly on the surface, applying paint, building marks, finishing the piece. The silkscreen lays the foundation. Preston decides what it becomes.
Size 16 × 24 inches
Medium Silkscreen with hand-applied paint
Edition 20 unique works
Framing Available framed or unframed
Finishing Hand-signed & numbered
XL Edition I
Diamond Dust
Silkscreen
Edition of 3
The diamond dust edition takes the same image to a different place entirely. Diamond dust is applied across the background of each print, creating a surface that catches and holds light in a way that shifts as you move around the work. Only three exist. These are the rarest works in the entire edition.
Size 37 × 46 inches
Medium Silkscreen with diamond dust finish
Edition 3 unique works
Framing Available framed or unframed
Finishing Hand-signed & numbered
XL Edition II
Hand Embellished
Silkscreen
Edition of 10
Each XL hand-embellished work is pulled from the same silkscreen as the standard edition, then finished individually by Preston at the larger format. Collectors choose their principal colour, which Preston incorporates into the hand-embellishment of their specific print. No two will be the same.
Size 37 × 46 inches
Medium Silkscreen with hand-applied paint
Edition 10 unique works

How each print is made

I
The painting
Preston painted Napoleon crossing the Alps. That original painting was then translated into film separations — each layer of colour, line and detail mapped and prepared for the mixed media silkscreen process.
II
The pull
Each print is pulled by hand through stretched mesh screens using archival inks on heavyweight fine art paper. Careful and deliberate work, one print at a time.
III
The finishing
Once dry, each print goes back to Preston. He works directly on the surface, applying paint by hand, making marks in the moment. This is where the edition of thirty becomes thirty individual works.
IV
The signing
Preston signs and numbers each work by hand. A certificate of authenticity is issued. The work is complete.

Questions

The standard edition consists of 20 works at 16 × 24 inches, each hand-finished by Preston with paint applied directly to the silkscreen surface. The XL edition consists of 10 larger works with diamond dust applied to the background before hand-finishing — a surface that responds to light in a way the standard edition doesn't. Both editions are hand-signed, numbered and certificated.
After each silkscreen print is pulled and dried, Preston works directly on the surface in his studio — applying paint by hand, making marks, responding to the print in front of him. These additions are unplanned and unrepeatable. No two prints receive the same treatment, which means no two prints are identical.
No. This edition is closed at 30 works — 20 standard and 10 XL. There will be no reprint of this image in this form. Once these works find homes, that's the end of the edition.
