Grannies was made for Barely Legal, Banksy's 2006 exhibition in Los Angeles. Two elderly women sit knitting, wearing jumpers that read "Thug For Life" and "Punks Not Dead". The image is quintessential Banksy: the joke lands first and the argument arrives a beat later.
The grandmothers are the opposite of rebellious, the very picture of domestic comfort, and yet they wear the language of rebellion as casually as cardigans. What happens when a culture's most transgressive slogans become just slogans, worn by people who would never mean them? The answer, in this image, is oddly moving.
