Banksy (b. c.1974)
Queen Vic, 2003
Screenprint in colours on wove paper | Unsigned edition of 500
Queen Vic was produced in 2003, during the period when Banksy was transitioning from Bristol street artist to internationally exhibited provocateur. The image — Queen Victoria depicted in a posture of satirical irreverence — is among his most directly confrontational early works: a comment on the monarchy, on British identity, on the specific relationship between power and propriety that Victoria came to embody.
The graphic economy of the image is characteristic of Banksy at his best: a single, immediately legible composition that carries its critical payload in the first second of viewing and then holds up to sustained attention. The colour palette is restrained, the composition clean. The joke and the argument are identical, which is why the work has lasted.
This is an unsigned impression from the edition of 500, accompanied by a Pest Control Certificate of Authenticity — the only authentication body recognised by the artist and the gold standard for any serious Banksy acquisition. Early Banksy editions from 2003 are among the most historically significant in his printed output.
Available through Creed Gallery, Ascot. Private viewings by appointment for collectors across Berkshire, Surrey, and London.
