JonOne — John Andrew Perello, born in New York to Dominican parents, based in Paris since 1987 — is one of the most significant figures in the history of graffiti and street art, a practitioner whose work has moved from the subway cars of New York in the 1980s to the walls of the Louvre, the collections of major museums, and the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in Paris. His calligraphic abstract canvases bring the energy and gesture of graffiti into the formal language of abstract expressionism with a fluency that few artists in either tradition have achieved.

BioMimétisme — the biological process by which living systems imitate each other's forms and functions — gives JonOne a title that connects his calligraphic gesture to the patterns of organic growth: the way that a mark on a canvas, like a vine on a wall, follows its own internal logic as it moves through space.
