Mary-Jane Alexander — Still Life: Not So Still Cat

Mary-Jane Alexander is a painter born in Zimbabwe who has lived and worked in the UK since 1977, now based in Surrey. Classically trained in anatomy, life drawing and sculpture, she is known for her rich, confident impasto brushwork and vivid, dramatic use of colour, dividing her time between Surrey and a studio in Campania, in the south of Italy.

Not So Still Cat is a tender, painterly study of a cat curled in sleep, rendered in Alexander's characteristically thick, expressive oil paint. Warm orange and cream tones catch the light across the cat's fur against a cooler backdrop of blues and greens, giving the piece a quiet, sunlit stillness despite its playful title.
