Mary-Jane Alexander — Sunflowers Heat Haze Italy

Mary-Jane Alexander is a painter born in Zimbabwe who has lived and worked in the UK since 1977, now based in Surrey. Classically trained in anatomy, life drawing and sculpture, she is known for her rich, confident impasto brushwork and vivid, dramatic use of colour, dividing her time between Surrey and a studio in Campania, in the south of Italy, where she held her inaugural exhibition in 2015.

Sunflowers Heat Haze Italy is a loose, sun-drenched sunflower field painted en plein air, capturing the shimmering heat and light of Alexander's Italian studio. Rows of sunflowers are rendered in thick, confident strokes of gold and green against a hazy sky of soft blue, pink and grey, painted directly from life rather than from a photograph.
