RETNA (Marquis Lewis, b. 1979) is recognised for his distinctive constructed script, drawing on influences from calligraphy, typography and historic writing systems to create a highly recognisable visual language.
Say My Name, So You Can See Me plays on the artist’s name itself. RETNA has explained that the name derives from removing the “I” from the word retina — with the “I” representing the eye. The concept is reflected in the work, where the constructed script becomes both language and visual form.
Dense, angular lettering in black is set against a light cream ground, with hand-applied diamond dust catching the light across the surface. The reflective finish introduces a subtle change in the work as it is viewed from different angles.
Published in Paris by Print Them All in 2017, the lithograph was printed on a Marinoni press and hand-cut. The work is signed and forms part of a limited edition.
RETNA’s practice combines influences from Egyptian hieroglyphs, Arabic and Hebrew calligraphy, Gothic blackletter and graffiti, resulting in a distinctive visual language that sits between writing, symbolism and abstraction.
An important example of RETNA’s graphic practice, available through Creed Gallery, Ascot.
