Robert Indiana (1928–2018)
Love Rising (The Black and White LOVE)
Unnumbered edition

Robert Indiana, born Robert Clark, was one of the defining figures of American Pop art. Working from his studio in New York's Coenties Slip artist community through the 1950s and 60s, he developed a visual language built on stencilled letters, bold numerals, and hard-edge colour, addressing American identity and history through the vocabulary of road signs and public text.

His LOVE composition — the letters stacked two over two, the O tilted on its axis — first appeared in 1964 and went on to become one of the most reproduced images of the twentieth century, translated into sculpture, a 1965 MoMA Christmas card, and a 1973 U.S. postage stamp. Love Rising strips the design back to black and white, letting the strength of the composition itself carry the work without the colour most associate with the image.

Available through Creed Gallery, Ascot, for collectors across Berkshire, Surrey, and London.
