About Ai Weiwei: The Most Significant Artist-Activist of the Twenty-First Century

Ai Weiwei (b. 1957) is a Chinese artist and architect whose practice has engaged directly with political oppression, human rights abuses, and the experience of displacement with a moral courage and artistic intelligence rarely matched in contemporary art. Born in Beijing, he spent his childhood in political exile with his family during the Cultural Revolution. He attended the Beijing Film Academy before relocating to New York in 1981, where he spent ten years studying Duchamp, Jasper Johns, and Warhol while developing his conceptual approach. Upon returning to China in 1993, he became a driving force in contemporary art while critiquing the government.

Key Works: Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn and Sunflower Seeds

Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn (1995) — three photographs documenting the deliberate smashing of a two-thousand-year-old artefact — and Sunflower Seeds (2010) — one hundred million hand-painted porcelain seeds filling the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern, made by 1,600 artisans in Jingdezhen — remain among the defining works of his career, each using scale and repetition to make a political point that resists simple summary.

Collecting Ai Weiwei at Creed Gallery

After his detention in 2011, Ai Weiwei has advocated for refugees, political prisoners, and the victims of institutional violence, work that runs directly through his art as well as his public activism. Creed Gallery currently holds Odyssey at £1,500, available for collectors across Berkshire, Surrey and London.

Why Collect Ai Weiwei

Few living artists combine Ai Weiwei's institutional standing — Tate Modern, a body of internationally recognised conceptual work — with such direct, ongoing political engagement. As with any artist, individual pieces vary in demand and value — our team is happy to talk you through the specifics of any work you're considering.
