About Banksy: Britain's Anonymous Street Artist
Banksy (born c. 1974) is an anonymous British artist whose identity has never been officially confirmed. He is widely associated with Bristol's graffiti scene of the early 1990s, where he developed the stencil style that made his images fast to make and instantly readable. Over the following decades those images moved from walls into the wider culture, satirical, political and often deadpan. The market followed. His 2009 painting Monkey Parliament, later retitled Devolved Parliament, sold at Sotheby's in 2019 for close to £10 million.
Understanding Banksy Authentication: Pest Control and Official Editions
Banksy is one of the most widely faked artists in the world, so authentication matters as much as the image. Pest Control Office, the body Banksy set up, is the only organisation that authenticates his work. It certifies works made for commercial sale, mostly print editions and originals, and issues a Certificate of Authenticity that carries half of a Di-Faced Tenner, with the matching half kept on file as a check. Street works, posters and most merchandise are generally not certified, although some are officially authorised, such as the wooden Peckham Rock postcard released by the British Museum in 2018.
