About Bradley Theodore: The Artist Who Paints Icons as Skeletons
Bradley Theodore was born in Middle Caicos in the Turks and Caicos Islands and raised in Miami before moving to New York. After studying at the School of Visual Arts he worked as a digital designer, and began painting colourful skeleton murals on the Lower East Side. He is said to have taught himself to paint, studying masters such as Dalí. His mural of Anna Wintour and Karl Lagerfeld as skeletons helped launch his career. Since then he has been the official artist of the 2016 US Open, the subject of the documentary Becoming: Bradley Theodore at the Tribeca Film Festival, and a Google Artist in Residence in 2017. He has painted murals in Tokyo, Paris, Milan and Tivat, Montenegro, and collaborated with Puma, Rolls-Royce and Lego.
The Skeleton as Portrait
Theodore keeps everything that makes a subject recognisable, from the outfit and hair to the pose, and paints the bones underneath in bright, gestural colour. He calls the approach "an act of living", a way of putting mortality, memory and celebrity in the same frame. His influences include contemporary fashion and Frida Kahlo, and his subjects run from David Bowie, Kate Moss and Audrey Hepburn to historical figures such as Marie Antoinette.

Our first two Theodores are limited editions. The Crown (2021), priced at £3,950, is a silkscreen and archival pigment print with gold foil on cotton archival paper, from an edition of 150, measuring 56 × 76.2 cm (64 × 84 cm framed). Skull – Black, priced at £4,500, is an edition of 50, framed at 24 × 32 inches.
