About Vincent Devine: Irish Artist, Hidden Shapes and the Subconscious
Vincent Devine is an Irish contemporary artist from County Offaly who works in Tullamore. He holds an Honours Degree in Visual Communications from the Technological University of the Shannon, and says he learned to draw at four and to paint at nine. He works in acrylic on canvas, which dries quickly and lets him build the ghostly layers that reveal hidden symbolism. His work has been exhibited in Hong Kong, Toronto, Miami, the UK and Ireland.
Ambigutree: Hidden Shapes in Trees
The Ambigutree series began with a painting for his grandmother, for which he painted thirteen trees to represent her children. When he stepped back, he saw that the foliage had formed the shape of a body. Since then, the trees in this series have hidden shapes, some symbolic and some literal, such as a shamrock at the centre of a leafy canopy, that reward slow looking. Collectors searching for Vincent Devine tree paintings will find the series at the heart of this collection.
Portraits and the Vicky Phelan Triptych
Devine's portraiture is one of the best-known parts of his work. His large triptych of the cervical cancer campaigner Vicky Phelan, representing her past, present and future, was unveiled on RTÉ's The Late Late Show in January 2021 and sold at auction in aid of the Heroes Aid charity, which raised around €46,000. His portraits of Madonna and Debbie Harry have also been reported in the Irish press, with the Madonna portrait used on one of her tours.
Neo-Dimensionism
Neo-Dimensionism is Devine's name for a body of work exploring the subconscious mind, which he describes as an attempt to "paint the unpaintable". Its Irish debut in 2018, according to his biography, sold out to a prominent collector. In 2023 he was invited to work with University College Dublin to depict the layers of cancer.
