Collection: James McQueen
James McQueen is a British contemporary artist celebrated for his vibrant reinterpretations of vintage book covers and cultural icons. Born in 1977 and now based between London and New York, McQueen has worked under a pseudonym since 2017, allowing his art to speak independently from his identity. His fascination with design began in childhood, drawn not to the stories in his grandfather’s vast collection of books but to the worn textures, typography and colours of their covers.
His creative process mirrors this early intrigue. McQueen builds his canvases through multiple layers of paint, sanding back to reveal traces of the earlier colours beneath, and finishing with a high-gloss lacquer. The result is a textured surface reminiscent of aged book jackets—familiar yet distinctly new. This technique forms the foundation of his practice, which blends nostalgia, wit and commentary on modern culture.
McQueen’s artworks often explore the transformation of mass-produced imagery into something rare and reflective. Like the Pop artists before him, he elevates everyday cultural objects into art that challenges perceptions of value and meaning. His work frequently plays with irony and humour, referencing identity, consumerism and the blurred line between art and design. The presence of recurring motifs—such as his playful monkey character—adds depth and personality, balancing sophistication with irreverence.
During the pandemic, McQueen also produced works supporting the UK’s NHS, further revealing his awareness of social and political contexts. His pieces have been exhibited widely, including solo shows such as You Don’t Know the Half of It and If You Ever Leave Me, I’m Coming With You at London’s Halcyon Gallery. His art continues to attract international collectors for its rich visual storytelling and tactile allure.
At Creed Gallery, McQueen’s work aligns perfectly with our ethos of showcasing artists who merge fine art and contemporary culture. His paintings invite viewers to reflect on memory, identity and the artistry hidden in everyday design, while his meticulous craftsmanship ensures every piece is both nostalgic and forward-looking.
