Collection: James McQueen | Original Art & Limited Editions

James McQueen is a British artist who has operated under a pseudonym since 2017 — a decision that keeps the work at the centre of the conversation rather than the biography. Working between London and New York, he has built one of the most commercially active practices in contemporary British art on a foundation that is deceptively simple: the vintage Penguin paperback cover, subjected to formal intelligence and sustained physical labour until it becomes something entirely new.

The technique is specific and distinctive. McQueen builds his canvases through multiple layers of paint, sanding back between each to reveal traces of what came before, then finishing with a high-gloss lacquer that gives the surface the worn, handled quality of a book that has been read many times. The result is a painting that looks old but is emphatically new — that carries the aesthetic authority of the literary canon while refusing to be contained by it.

His Anthology series, inspired directly by his wife's reading pile, explores what an individual's book choices reveal about their interior world. His titles — Nobody Gets Out Sober, If You Ever Leave Me, Shit Happens, Oh Bollocks — operate in the same territory: ordinary language given the gravity of literature, the familiar made strange by the context in which it appears.

McQueen has exhibited at Halcyon Gallery in London and his secondary market is active and strengthening. During the pandemic he produced works in support of the NHS, demonstrating the social awareness that runs alongside the wit in his practice.

Creed Gallery is among the leading UK galleries for James McQueen's secondary market, with a regularly updated selection of originals, hand painted multiples, artist proofs, and limited editions available for collectors across Berkshire, Surrey, Virginia Water, Wentworth, and London.
