Jennine Parker is a British sculptor whose bronze figures are rooted in biography as much as formal training — works that connect directly to her own life, her own body, and her own experience of movement, grace, and the specific quality of physical intelligence that dance and gymnastics develop. Between the ages of seven and twenty-one, dance and gymnastics were central to her life, and the energy, poise, and expressive potential of the moving figure remain the starting point for everything she makes.
Her process begins in sustained observation — life drawing as the foundation, the eye and hand trained to see the human form with the accuracy that sculpture demands. She works primarily in clay, a material whose tactile responsiveness suits a practice rooted in the direct engagement between the maker's hands and the subject's form. From clay the work moves through wax or plaster depending on the piece's requirements, and finally to the foundry, where the transformation from clay to bronze — what she describes as the final evolution of the creative process — takes place.
The surfaces of her bronzes carry the record of this process: a stylish juxtaposition of smooth and textured finishes, the texture inspired by weathered stones, knotted wood, and the surfaces of aged walls that she photographs obsessively as sources of formal inspiration. The sculptures are as stimulating to the touch as to the sight — objects that reward handling as well as viewing, that exist in three-dimensional space with the full authority of a medium that has been used for significant sculpture across cultures and millennia.
