Schoony | Hyper-Realist Sculpture

Schoony — Jon Schofield, b. 1970 — is a British sculptor whose practice is rooted in thirty years of special effects and prosthetics work for the film industry. Beginning at fifteen and working across more than a hundred productions — including Saving Private Ryan and Troy — he developed a command of materials, scale, and the specific challenge of making artificial things look real that informs every aspect of his fine art work.

He came to the London art scene in 2008 through Mutate Britain's One Foot in the Grove — one of the most significant street art exhibitions of that period — bringing with him a technical vocabulary that no other artist in the room possessed. His sculptural practice combines the most advanced contemporary fabrication technologies with traditional methods, the combination producing objects of unusual material precision and psychological intensity.

His Boy Soldier series is his defining body of work — hyper-realist sculptures of children in military contexts, the innocence of the face in direct confrontation with the implications of what surrounds it. The prototype from which all Boy Soldier editions derive is available through Creed Gallery, alongside the Rose Gold limited edition print, the Shield Rose in black glass, and the Ace Club sculpture. Each work carries the technical authority of a practitioner who has spent three decades understanding exactly what materials can and cannot do, and pushing consistently against those limits.
