About Keith Haring: From the Subway to the World
Keith Haring was born in Reading, Pennsylvania, in 1958 and moved to New York in 1978 to study at the School of Visual Arts. He began by drawing in chalk on the black paper that covered unused advertising panels in the subway, work seen daily by commuters before it was erased. His imagery of the radiant baby, the barking dog and dancing figures is instantly recognisable, but it took on urgent subjects too: the AIDS crisis, apartheid and drug addiction. He was diagnosed HIV-positive in 1988 and died in February 1990, aged 31. Tate Liverpool staged a major retrospective in 2019, and his work is held in the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney. Among his collaborators in New York were Andy Warhol and Grace Jones.
The Naples Suite
Haring drew the Naples Suite lithographs in 1983 in connection with his show at the Lucio Amelio gallery in Naples. La Galerie de Poche in Paris published them in 1990 for the exhibition Keith Haring 1983 (15–30 January), his last during his lifetime, and the prints are reported to have been signed shortly before his death. The sheets are black lithographs on wove paper, around 32 × 23.5 cm each. We offer the six-plate set (£2,500) and individual plates such as Naples Suite Plate #05 (£500).
Montreux Jazz Festival, 1983
Haring designed the poster for the 17th Montreux Jazz Festival in three colourways: yellow, pink and green. The poster is a five-colour silkscreen, 100 × 70 cm, printed in Bern by Serigraphie Uldry, and carries his signature printed in the plate rather than signed by hand. Our three colourways are £1,200 each.
